Choosing a Roller
POINTS TO CONSIDER BEFORE PURCHASING A GREENS ROLLER
Brand: Is it a recognised product? How long has it been in the market-place? Are testimonials available? TRU-TURF has been involved in rolling since the early 1940’s and have been manufacturing golf and bowling rollers for the past 14 years.
Weight: Is it a critical issue? Is reduced compaction of the soil important to you? It should be. TRU-TURF’S RS48-11B Model exerts 3.5 p.s.i. on the ground; the weight is distributed across 4 rollers, applying ½ the psi that a person applies to the ground. Therefore compaction is not a factor when using the TRU-TURF Rollers.
Do you have complicated and undulating greens? TRU-TURF have considered this to be a problem when rolling greens with a too wide 36” – 39” rolling bar. You will get line marks and creasing on the greens. We are the only company to build a 48” wide model with split smoothing heads (2 x 24”), to ensure the roller will contour-follow the most complicated surfaces.
Is the machine user-friendly?
Is it easy to steer?
Is it comfortable?
Is it fast in operation, but also safe? Some machines feel threatening in certain conditions. The TRU-TURF roller is fast and safe. Interesting to note the speed of rolling has no effect on the results; a slow or fast rolling speed will produce the same results.
Is it powerful enough? Underpowered machines do not give long-term service, reliability or climbing ability.
Is the machine easy to trail between greens etc.? Check the balance and difficulty between using a separate trailer and connecting a built-in trailer to the prime mover. Some Roller and Trailer combinations are awkward and heavy to balance when connecting to a towing vehicle.
Balance of the roller – even weight distribution – is also very important to achieve the best results on the green. TRU-TURF’S rollers are evenly balanced (50% Front: 50% Rear). We do not adjust the seat simply because we do not want to alter the weight distribution across the rollers. Instead of adjusting the seat fore and aft, we provide adjustment in the steering control to a forward or back position. Other manufacturers alter the seat position forward or back. This, in turn, alters the weight distribution across the roller/s, causing uneven rolling pressure on the ground. Some manufacturers have at least 70% of the weight distributed towards one end of their rollers. Look at the rollers side-on. You will notice that the engine, the transmission and the seat are all towards one end. This causes greater weight being applied to the greens on one end of that roller/s compared to the other end. TRU-TURF rollers are not like this.
Did you know the patented TRU-TURF roller configuration with its triple offset rollers fitted in the smoothing head is the only roller produced with this concept? Why? Because we need only to true the surface effectively with the least amount of weight possible. This design allows us to do that. All other manufacturers have either a one-roller configuration or a two-roller configuration. These styles will follow the bumps & sometimes exacerbate the problem. The TRU-TURF system will only true the surface - by the design, and not by weight. No other roller has this same ability or effectiveness.
Is the roller a high maintenance problem? The TRU-TURF rollers have undergone constant Research and Development over the past 14 years. They have proven to be very low maintenance machines. They are fitted with an hour/tachometer meter to ensure all servicing schedules are performed to the manufacturer’s specification and on time.
The TRU-TURF rollers have only one adjustment fitted to them (Transmission Struts); this is pre-set ex-factory and it is unlikely to require adjustment in service. If it requires adjusting it is very simple to do as described in the maintenance manual. The drive chain tension is automatically adjusted as it stretches and wears.

Vibration & Noise: Do rollers conform to International Standards? The TRU-TURF rollers conform to and meet the most stringent Standard tests.
Spares & Backup: Are they readily available? The TRU-TURF’s National Dealer Network is here to ensure that these services are available to you. If for some reason you need to contact the TRU-TURF Headquarters, please email: sales@truturf.com or visit our web site at www.truturf.com for any assistance.
Be careful of high pressure hydraulic lines found on some other rollers. If not serviced correctly, they are a recipe for disaster. TRU-TURF rollers have all steel, low-pressure lines. The pipes circulate oil through a filter from a stainless steel reservoir tank through the transmission and return, promoting coolness and cleanliness and resulting in increased life of the transmission.
Anti slip fitted to drive rollers - is it long lasting and of good quality? TRU-TURF uses a method whereby they have the raw rubber compound applied to a steel tube; it is cured in a steam vessel then machined cylindrically; it is radiused on each end to prevent line marking on the green. This system is guaranteed to give many years of trouble free rolling.
Other features as standard or as an option; understand how they work; make sure they perform as described or expected. TRU-TURF’s RS48-11B has a built in spiker as standard; it is your choice to engage it or not. If you do, it will constantly and evenly penetrate the green to a depth of 1 1/4” (30mm). The machine has the power to operate this feature continually. The spiker blades leave very little disturbance on the surface; they aid in reducing surface tension; they assist in getting oxygen into the surface; help wetting agents and water to penetrate; drain off excess moisture from the green.
Summing up, the TRU-TURF RS48-11B
Can roll steep, undulated greens wet or dry, day or night without slipping.
